Why we built a desktop app for Azure in 2026

The story behind Prizmik — why we chose native desktop and a pay-once model in a world of SaaS subscriptions.

April 2, 2026 · 8 min read

We need to talk about a problem that every cloud developer knows but nobody really talks about: the daily, soul-crushing friction of web-based management portals. The slow blade loads, the constant context-switching, the feeling that your most critical tool is actively working against your focus. The Azure Portal is a marvel of engineering, but for the developer in the trenches, it can feel like death by a thousand paper cuts.

We didn't start Prizmik to build a portal replacement. We started it because, as Azure developers ourselves, we were tired of the paper cuts. We wanted a tool that felt less like a website and more like a professional IDE: fast, focused, and built for flow.

The Unpopular Choice: Desktop First

In 2026, building a native desktop application is an almost contrarian act. The world has moved to the web. SaaS is king. But we believe that for a certain class of professional tool—the kind you live in all day—native still matters. Your code editor is a native app. Your design tool is a native app. Why should your cloud management tool be a slow-loading browser tab?

Choosing native wasn't about nostalgia; it was about a core philosophy: respecting the developer's time and focus above all else. It allows us to build an experience that's simply not possible in a browser. An interface that's instant. Split panels that let you see logs and metrics side-by-side. A command palette that makes the mouse optional. It's a tool designed to get out of your way so you can do your best work.

The Other Unpopular Choice: Ownership

Then we made another choice that goes against the grain. In a world of endless monthly subscriptions, we chose a perpetual, pay-once license model. When you buy a Prizmik product, you own it. Like a good hammer, it's a tool that's yours to keep.

This isn't just about price; it's about the relationship we want to have with our users. We're not trying to lock you into a service. We're building a tool we hope you'll love. If we want you to buy the next major version, we have to earn it by making it demonstrably better. It's a simple, honest transaction between a toolmaker and a craftsperson.

The Result: A Toolkit, Not a Portal

This philosophy led us to create a suite of five purpose-built applications, one for each of the PaaS services we lived in every day: Container Apps, Web Apps, Functions, Static Web Apps, and API Management. Each one is a self-contained, professional-grade tool designed to make managing that specific service a joy, not a chore.

We built Prizmik because it's the tool we always wished we had. A tool that's fast, that respects our focus, and that treats us like professionals. If you've ever felt the friction of the portal, if you believe your tools should be a source of leverage, not frustration, then we built it for you, too.

Unify. Focus. Control.
